South West Coast Path 2002 - Padstow to Sennen |
| Day 1: Padstow to Porthcothan |
| 13.6 miles Distance from Minehead: 179.7 miles Read today's journal entry |

Estuary English: We got round this problem by finishing last year's walk at Rock - and starting this year's one at Padstow! Here the tide's out. |

Looking back: Another view of the Camel Estuary. If you're not starting a stage from Padstow, never fear, there's a ferry service. |

A year to cross a river: Looking back on Polzeath from Stepper Point. We'd covered this section as a day walk - long hikes were out thanks to the Foot and Mouth outbreak. |

The route less travelled: There's a coastguard lookout above the path here (just past Stepper Point) which is often manned. |

Coastal erosion: There's some interesting geology as well as a great view looking back from Cadoc Point. |

Worth getting up for: It's particularly nice walking in the morning, as this view of the beach at Harlyn Bay shows. |

Nicer than it sounds: Polventon Bay, or Mother Ivey's bay, has a sewage treatment works round the corner - and along the path is Stinking Cove! You can see the Merope Rocks in the distance. |

Filling a gap: Trevose Head lighthouse was opened in 1847 to assist ships travelling between Lundy and the Longships. |

So this is Treyarnon Bay? The rocks in the foreground are Treyarnon Point and part of Trevose Head is visible in the background. |

Ancient Britons: These three coves are the sites of an ancient settlement. Here are the eroded remains of an Iron Age hillfort. |

|

Much later in the day: It's nearly dusk as we approach Porthcothan Bay - as ever, we've managed to pick a B&B at the far end of town. |
