South West Coast Path

 • 630 miles from Minehead to Poole

In 1997 we shouldered our rucksacks for the first time and set off on a journey into the unknown. We'd walked the North Norfolk Coast Path, but that was flat and easy. The South West was a different matter altogether. Each year has offered different challenges - severe valleys, meandering inland detours, driving rain, occasionally just finding the time to visit the south west was a challenge in itself. Each year we finish, look at each other, conclude that we need our heads examining - and immediately start planning the next year's walk.

We've divided this part of the site into sections for each year - click on the map below, or see the summaries further down the page. Some years have photo pages as well as text. For the launch of this site we have only completed the 2002 and 2003 sections and the 2004 preview - the rest will follow soon.

The South West Coast Path

St Mawes, from Carricknath Point  • 2004

An estuary-to-estuary walk from Falmouth to Plymouth, taking in Fowey and Looe, is this year's plan.

Dr Syntax's Head  • 2003

The year we 'turned the corner' at Land's End and reached the half-way point of the path near Porthallow.

Wheal Coates mine remains  • 2002

A romp down the north Cornish coast from Padstow ran into rough going and foul weather.

Port Isaac harbour at sunset  • 2001

The foot and mouth outbreak closed the countryside, so we managed just one stage this year.

Looking back towards Tintagel  • 2000

A year in which we did only a short section - but it was a good one, from Tintagel to Pt Isaac.

Exmansworthy Cliff, on the run-in to Hartland Point  • 1999

This was the year of the vicious river valleys - no walker forgets the path near Hartland Point.

Colourful houses in Appledore  • 1998

Good coastal walking and an inland detour took us from Combe Martin to Clovelly via Barnstaple.

The start of the path  • 1997

Our first year was a steep, painful but rewarding learning curve that ended earlier than planned.
